What is ‘totting up’?
This is the term used if you reach the maximum of 12 points on your licence and the court has to impose a disqualification of at least 6 months.
Can the disqualification be longer than 12 months?
Yes it can.
- 6 months – you have no previous disqualification in the last 3 years
- 12 months – previous disqualification for a fixed period of 56 days or more imposed in the last 3 years
- 2 years – 2 previous disqualifications for a fixed period of 56 days or more imposed in the last 3 years
It may be possible to avoid a disqualification by arguing either exceptional hardship or special reasons.
